McMurray named head football coach

The Lions have a new leader for the football program in Scott McMurray.

McMurray was the varsity outside linebacker coach and special teams coordinator for the Lions this past season in which the Lions finished 6-4.

“Myself and the coaching staff look forward to taking the Rushville Lions into the 2014 season and beyond,” Coach McMurray said. “I truly believe this school can be competitive in the EIAC and we are already working hard in the weight room getting ready for the 2014 season.”

McMurray has a long, successful history in football. He graduated from Terre Haute North High School in 1990 where he competed in both football and track. He went on to play four years of football on scholarship at the University of Indianapolis (1990-94), where he was a two-year starter and earned a business education background.

McMurray has 20 seasons of high school coaching experience with 18 coming at the varsity level. He was the freshman football coach at Mt. Vernon from 1994-95 before becoming the varsity defensive/offensive assistant at Mt. Vernon from 1996-2005. He was the defensive coordinator for five seasons at Mt. Vernon (2006-10).

McMurray then moved on to Lawrence Central High School where he was the varsity outside linebacker coach and JV defensive coordinator in 2011 and 2012. His move to the Lion football program came in 2013.

“I think he is a great selection. He comes with a lot of experience, professionalism and intensity. I think he can really connects well with the kids,” RCHS athletic director Dave Green said.

During McMurray’s coaching career, he has been a part of coaching teams to three sectional titles, one regional title, one semistate title, six conference titles and the 2012 Class 5A state title with Lawrence Central (15-0).

McMurray looks to Doug Peacock (former Mt. Vernon head coach), Jayson West (former Lawrence Central and now Warren Central head coach), Rob Robertson (defensive coordinator at Warren Central), Rick Carrico (former head coach and current Warren Central assistant), Tim Adams (former defensive coordinator Mt. Vernon) John Carpenter (former Mt. Vernon assistant) and Tim Bless (head coach at Columbus North) as his coaching mentors.

McMurray has been married for 19 years and has two daughters.
