RUSHVILLE — The undefeated Marauders improved to 11-0 on the season with a 59-37 victory over the Lions.

Mt. Vernon jumped out to a 7-0 lead with CJ Coleman scoring the first five points of the game. Hunter Orme’s two free throw got the Lions on the board. After three Marauder points, Rushville got a pair from the charity stripe by Cameron Cox and bucket by Nate Niehoff to close the first quarter with the Marauders leading 11-6.

Rushville closed to within two early in the second quarter on a rebound bucket by Nate Hoeing and again at the 4:15 mark on two Orme free throws. Mt. Vernon then scored six straight to push the lead to eight. After a Mitch Laird triple for the Lions, Coleman scored six straight and the Marauders led 28-19 at the half.

The third quarter was critical for Mt. Vernon. The Marauders outscored the Lions 21-5 to extend the lead to 49-24 after three quarters. Mt. Vernon’s Dan Werner and Christian Smith hit back-to-back 3-pointers to close the quarter and send the game to the final eight minutes.

The Lions outscored the Marauders 13-10 in the final frame, but the large deficit was too much to come back from as the Marauders stayed unbeaten.

Rushville was led by the eight points of Orme. Coleman led all scorers with 24 points.

In the junior varsity contest, the Lions won 38-28.

Bryce Dye led the Lions with six 3-pointers for 18 points. Zach McKinney had eight to spark the Marauders.

On Saturday, the Lions (5-6) built a big third quarter lead and held off a Rebel rally to win 55-53 over Muncie Southside (4-7).

Rushville owned the first three quarters of the game - pushing the lead to as high as 21 points in the third quarter.

With the score at 6-4, the Lions went on a 7-2 run to end the first quarter. Alex Yurack drained a 3-pointer to start the run and followed with a bucket off the Orme feed. John Riddell found Cameron Cox to end the eight minutes with Rushville leading 13-6.

The Lions opened the second quarter with eight straight points. Austin Yurack got things going with a steal and bucket and Yurack’s bucket ended the run with Rushville leading 21-6. Later in the quarter, the lead ballooned to 30 on a 3-pointer by Mitch Laird. Southside’s McKenzee Nash hit just before the buzzer to cut the deficit to 30-14 at the half.

The teams went back-and-forth to start the third before a baseline dunk by Orme gave Rushville a 38-18 led.  After the Rebels cut the deficit to 16, Orme scored and Yurack followed with his second 3-pointer to make it 45-24. Yurack’s bucket ended the third with the Lions in front 47-28.

The Rebels then began the rally. A bucket by Jai’rese Simpson started the quarter with De’aundre Twilley and Terrance Johnson following with scores. Rushville got a free throw from Yurack before Twilley and Johnson combined to score the next 14 points. Two Twilley free throws had the game knotted at 48-48 with two minutes to play. Two Hoeing free throws gave the lead back to Rushville, but a bucket by Aaren Kelly tied it again. Hoeing’s drive to the bucket gave the lead to the Lions for good at 52-50. A free throw by Orme and two from Niehoff extended the lead to five before a half-court buzzer beater by Nash closed the game with the Lions holding on 55-53.

Hoeing led the Lions with 14 points with Yurack finishing with 13. Twilley led all scorers with 20.

In the junior varsity game, the Lions (6-5) got a bucket by Dye to send the game to overtime and then his back-door lay-up broke the tie as the Lions won 47-45. Dye finished with 12 points followed by Brad Busald with 11. Southside was led by Darcell Hunt with 16 and Steven Winningham with 12.
