RUSHVILLE — GREENSBURG - Defending sectional champion South Dearborn used a 4-run sixth inning to claim the softball sectional title 5-1 over Rushville at Greensburg.

The Lady Knights advance to the regional while the Lady Lions finish the season at 11-11.

The game was scoreless through three innings. The Lady Knights got on the board when a fly ball could not be handled by the Lady Lions and South Dearborn’s Barrett ended up at second base. With two-outs, Vertz’s triple scored the first run for the Lady Knights.

In the sixth, the Lady Knights added four runs, only one earned, to grab a 5-0 lead.

Rushville broke the scoreless drought in the seventh as Shelby Woods triple to right field. Woods scored as Nicole Hoeing reached first on a South Dearborn error. A strike out and double play ended the game and gave the Lady Knights the title.

Rushville threatened in the first inning as Catie Liggett singled and Riley Lanham singled with two outs. The Lady Lions could not push across a run.

On the night, the Lady Lions had just three hits and struck out 12 times against Vertz.

Taylor Hoeing went the distance for the Lady Lions in the circle in her final high school game. She allowed two earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out six.
