Logano in hot water again

IndyCar puts on a show

RUSHVILLE — Sprint Cup driver Joey Logano can’t seem to stay out of physical altercations with other drivers.

Last weekend in California, Logano continued to trade paint with Denny Hamlin, a carryover from Bristol.

Hamlin and Logano were battling for the win on the final lap, Logano came up the track sending Hamlin into a spin.

Logano scrapped the outside wall, but limped home in sixth. Hamlin slammed the inside retaining wall and suffered a fractured back.

The two are former teammates with Joe Gibbs Racing.

But the real action came after the race when Tony Stewart confronted Logano about a blocking move on the final restart.

Stewart said Logano is a “rich kid” who never had to work for anything in his life.

I don’t understand why Stewart was upset since he blocked competitors to win the opening Nationwide Series race at Daytona, which caused a huge wreck in the tri-oval.

At least for the next few weeks one can expect some fireworks among this trio, particularly with Martinsville next on the schedule.

Blocking is a common practice in NASCAR and is not likely to end anytime in the foreseeable future. When drivers are going for the win, they will do anything possible to keep the lead.

In other racing news: I watched the IZOD IndyCar season opening race in St. Petersburg and though the level of competition was spread throughout the field. There was actually more passing on the street course than I expected.

James Hinchcliffe recorded his first victory with the series and also gave sponsor GoDaddy its first victory. When Danica Patrick won in Japan she had sponsorship from Motorola.

One has to wonder what J.R. Hildebrand was thinking when he ran over Will Power’s car during a caution period. For some unexplained reason the on-car camera showed Hildebrand accelerating up at least two gears and climbing over the right side of Power’s car and into the retaining wall.

Hildebrand said he was looking at his steering wheel at the time of the incident, which knocked Power out of contention.

Simona de Silvestro had an impressive run in her first start with KV Racing. She ran in the top five for most of the race and was running third with 20 laps remaining when the tires on her car faded at the end. She was passed by teammate Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti and Scott Dixon on the final two laps to finish sixth.

Anderson Speedway opens the 2013 season with a 100-lap Enduro race for the Thunder Car Division with Legends, Front Wheel Drive oval action and Thunder Roadsters. Racing starts at 6 p.m.
