The Lady Lion softball team opened the 2014 season with a doubleheader against Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference foe Lawrenceburg.
The two teams battled to split with the Lady Lions winning the opener 5-4 and the Lady Tigers taking the second game 6-2.
“I was please with the effort of the girls today, being our first games of the season,” Coach Bev Stull said. “We played pretty well defensively with just two errors on the day.”
Nicole Hoeing went the distance in the circle in both games. She allow seven hits and four runs in the first game.
Six of those seven hits by the Lady Tigers came in their 4-run fourth inning.
Rushville took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Shelbie Brown singled with one out. With two outs, Gabby Doyle single to put runners on first and second. Kylie Martindale singled to plate Brown and put Doyle on third. Martindale then stole second and on the play, Doyle scored from third. Martindale came around to score on an error to give the Lady Lions a 3-0 lead.
Rushville pushed the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third as Catie Liggett singled and went to second on a passed ball. With one out, Riley Lanham singled to score Liggett. Shelby Woods and Brown both singled to load the bases with one out, but a pop out and ground out ended the threat.
After the Lady Tigers knotted the game with the 4-run fourth inning, the Lady Lions pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the sixth. Hoeing doubled to start the inning. Brooke Niehoff ran for Hoeing and went to third on a ground out. Martindale put down a bunt to score Hoeing for the 5-4. Tori Colestock and Liggett both added a single before the inning ended.
The Lady Tigers went down in order in the seventh to end the game.
