Spartans win soccer sectional title

RICHMOND – Lyboult Field hosted the soccer sectional final Saturday as conference foes Connersville and Rushville met for the title.

Two quick goals in the first half and four goals in the second half allowed the Spartans to claim the sectional title 6-0.

In the first minute of action, a Connersville corner kick went off a Lion defender and found the back of the net for a Spartan 1-0 advantage.

The Spartans added a second goal at the 32:42 mark of the first half as Connersville’s Jack Reed controlled a through ball and scored.

“We were down by two at the half, but I thought we were still in it,” Coach Bob Beeler said. “After those first two goals our defense stiffened, and even though we were behind, I thought if we could get on the board in the second half we had a good chance.”

Connersville did not allow the Lions to make a comeback. The Spartans added an early goal in the second half (33:49) to push the lead to 3-0.

Just three minutes later, a fourth Spartan goal put Connersville in a commanding 4-0 lead.

The final two Spartan goals came at the 24:53 mark and the 8:40 mark to make the final margin 6-0.

“Obviously, it was a tough day for us, both offensively and defensively,” Coach Beeler said. “You have to give credit to the Spartans.”

“It was a good season for our team,” Coach Beeler added. “We had a lot of ups and downs, but our seniors Frank Sammons, Zach Stiers, Grant Houston, Trent McQueen, Michael Van Schoyck, Ethan Foster, Ricky Thompson, Derrik Justice and Hunter Yazel provided the leadership we wanted and did a really great job for us. It will be tough losing that many seniors, and senior Nicole Hoeing, our manager, did a great job for us as well.”
