Tennis season ends in sectional

CONNERSVILLE – The Lion tennis season came to end in the first round of the IHSAA sectional at Connersville. The Lions dropped a 5-0 match to Franklin County.

“This match was a carbon copy of our first meeting with the Wildcats at Rushville a month ago with the same outcome. Paul Hershberger playing at No. 2 singles for the Lions once again had a close match losing in three sets,” Coach Holly Heuer said. “We lost a first set tie-breaker at No. 1 doubles and weren’t able to get back on track losing in two sets.

“We were apparently able to keep pace with Franklin County this year, but we did not gain any ground on them. We coaches have enjoyed working closely with our new players. We aren’t normally able to spend so much time with our beginners, but that’s how things worked out this year,” Coach Heuer said.

Jake Fowler was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Cole Meyers at No. 1 singles. Hershberger won the first set in a tie-breaker 7-6 (7-2) at No. 2 singles before dropping the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 to Jeremy DeFossett. At No. 3 singles, Will Hogsett lost to Garrett Crowe 6-3, 6-1.

The No. 1 doubles team of Brandon Slaton and Chase Hamilton lost 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 to Lucas Fledderman and Daniel Willhelm. At No. 2 doubles, Michael St. John and Adam Martin lost 6-1, 6-2 to Tyler Calihan and Jacob Baudendistal.

Dragons top Lions on the courts

The Lions rounded out the tennis regular season with a 5-0 loss to New Palestine.

“Today’s match was our last tune up before we start sectional play. While we lost the match tonight, our scores show an improvement that I hope we will carry over into our sectional opener against Franklin County. We consider the tournament our second season and we are about to find out what we are made of,” Coach Holly Heuer said.

At No. 1 singles, Jake Fowler lost 7-5, 6-3 to Coltin Espich. At No. 2 singles, Paul Hershberger lost 6-3, 6-3 to Kip Peters. At No. 3 singles, Will Hogsett fell 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

The No. 1 doubles team of Brandon Slaton and Chase Hamilton lost to Sam O’Dell and Correy Cavin 7-6 (11-9), 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Michael St. John and Adam Martin lost 6-1, 6-2 to Justin Stirm and Logan Oxley.

In junior varsity singles, Andrew Rice lost 6-3 to Correy Cavin.
