The Lions hosted former conference rival Shelbyville at the Richard Bradley Tennis Center. The Golden Bears defeated the Lions 5-0.
At No. 1 singles, Jake Fowler lost 6-0, 6-0 to John Cox. Paul Hershberger lost 6-0, 6-1 to Sam Shammas at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Will Hogsett lost a three-setter 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to Tyler Land.
In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Brandon Slaton and Chase Hamilton lost 6-0, 6-0 to Bobby Drake and Derek Blain. At No. 2 doubles, Michael St. John and Adam Martin lost 6-0, 6-0.
On Wednesday, the Lions were defeated by host Mt. Vernon 5-0.
“We talked early on this year about what to expect as a young team with so many newcomers in the lineup. At this point, they’ve certainly come to realize what that harsh reality actually feels like,” Coach Holly Heuer said. “We think they have responded as well as should be expected. Despite what some of our scores might indicate, we feel like they are playing hard each match and continuing to get better and that’s all we can ask.”
At No. 2 singles, Hershberger went three sets before falling 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 to Matt Hays. At No. 1 singles, Fowler lost 6-0, 6-0 to Mark Alvarado. At No. 3 singles, Hogsett lost 6-0, 6-0 to Brandon Ware.
At No. 1 doubles Slaton and Hamilton fell 6-0, 6-0 to Ben Bobb and Johnny Zinn. At No. 2 doubles, St. John and Martin lost 6-0, 6-0 to Alex McMillan and Derek Barrett.
