Academic All-State

Sixty-nine Indiana high school seniors - 33 boys and 36 girls - have been chosen as first-team Academic All-State by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

In addition, 135 more boys and 107 more girls were recognized as honorable mention Academic All-State for 2014, IBCA executive director Steve Witty said.

The IBCA Academic All-State team is a program where academic prowess and athletic prowess both are considered in the selections. Items such as grade-point average, college board scores and academic class rank are considered along with athletic performance in areas such as points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game and shooting percentage.

Rushville’s Mackenzie Campbell was on the First Team.

Indiana WR discharged after near drowning

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — A hospital spokeswoman says Indiana wide receiver Isaac Griffith has been discharged following a near drowning along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Kim Savage says Griffith was discharged Sunday and that he and his family will be heading home to Indiana soon.

Savage has said Griffith is expected to make a full recovery.

A friend rescued the 19-year-old Fort Wayne Homestead product after he was caught in a rip current March 17 at Siesta Beach in Sarasota. The friend performed CPR on Griffith until emergency personnel arrived on the scene.

The player’s father, Manchester University football coach Shannon Griffith, and his wife, Kim, have been at their son’s bedside since shortly after the accident.

Ortiz, Red Sox agree to 2015 contract

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Big Papi is staying put.

David Ortiz and the Red Sox agreed to a 2015 contract Sunday with options for the following two years, a move that means the popular slugger will probably finish his career in Boston.

Ortiz, the World Series MVP last season, has led the Red Sox to three championships in the past 10 years. He batted .309 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs in 137 games last season after missing all of spring training while rehabbing a strained Achilles tendon.
