Miss Basketball is Logansport’s Jennings

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Logansport’s Whitney Jennings, the state’s leading scorer this season and No. 5 on the Indiana career list, has been named the 2014 Indiana Miss Basketball, The Indianapolis Star announced Wednesday.

The 5-foot-5 point guard received 177 of the 332 votes cast for the award, the Star said (http://indy.st/1ihs0YK ). Maura Muensterman of Evansville Mater Dei finished second with 97 votes. No one else had more than 10 votes.

“I always dreamed about it,” Jennings said. “I never really let myself believe it could actually happen. From my freshman year, people said maybe you could win Miss Basketball. But I just knew I had to have four really good years and whatever happens happens.”

Jennings, who’s also the 2013-14 Gatorade Indiana girls basketball player of the year, led the state in scoring this season at 32 points per game. The Iowa recruit also averaged eight rebounds, 7.4 assists and five steals per game as Logansport (24-3) reached the Class 4A semistate before losing to Penn.

She averaged 24.2 points per game as a freshman, 25.4 points in 2011-12 and 23.6 points last season to end her career with 2,641 points. She also averaged at least seven assists per game each of the last three seasons and 2.9 steals per game or better each of her four years.

Logansport High School girls basketball coach Jerry Hoover, who has coached for more than 40 years, said Jennings’ work ethic stands out.

“She probably spends more time at it than any player I’ve ever coached,” Hoover said.

FGCU women hoping to rekindle men’s NCAA magic

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — No one in the NCAA women’s tournament field makes more 3-pointers per game than Florida Gulf Coast.

So, will it be Dunk City one year, 3 City the next?

Remember, it was the FGCU men who became the feel-good story of the NCAA tourney a year ago, their run-and-dunk ways leading them to a pair of upsets and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen as a No. 15 seed, earning that “Dunk City” moniker.
