It took until late in the third quarter for the Lions to separate from the Vikings of Blue River Valley Saturday on the Vikings' home floor. Rushville went on a 6-0 run to close the third quarter with the 44-37 lead. The Vikings never cut the deficit under seven points the rest of the way as the Lions posted the 60-51 victory.
The Lions improve to 3-2 while the Vikings fall to 2-4.
The Lions shot the ball well from long range. Rushville drained nine 3-pointers in the contest, led by five from Mitch Laird (game-high 19 points).
BRV took the early lead 4-2 on buckets by Michael Froedge and Mike Jenkins. Rushville grabbed the lead at 6-4 on a bucket by John Riddell and two Hunter Orme free throws. After Noah Madison tied the game, Nate HoeingÕs bucket gave the Lions the lead for good in the first quarter.
LairdÕs first triple gave Rushville a 16-9 lead late in the first. The Vikings closed to 16-13 on four straight from Froedge as the first quarter came to an end.
The cut the deficit to one before Alex Yurack hit a 3-pointer. Hoeing followed with a triple as the lead grew to 22-15. Mason Brown answered with a triple on the other end, but the Lions came right back with two Orme free throws and a 3-pointer from the right corner by Nate Niehoff.
The Vikings went on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 27-27. Laird then hit back-to-back from long range to give Rushville the lead back33-27. BRV hit three free throws to close the half trailing 33-30.
The Lions extended the lead to 38-32 on an Orme 3-pointer midway through the third. The Vikings rallied with a bucket from Madison and 3-pointer from Devon Brown to cut the deficit to one at 38-37.
That is when the Lions went on the 6-0 run to end the third with the 44-37 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
The Vikings closed the deficit to seven on two occasions, but could not get over the hump to make a run at the Lions. Free throws by Laird and Cameron Cox closed out the victory.
Laird finished with 19 points and Orme had 11 to lead the Lions. Froedge had 17 for the Vikings with Cross scoring 14 and Madison scoring 10.
In the junior varsity game, the Lions outscored the Vikings 11-3 in the third and 17-9 in the fourth to post the 53-30 victory. The Lions move to 2-3 on the season.
Bryce Dye led the Lions with 12 points. Alex Yurack had 10 and Brad Busald had 11. Josh Berry led the Vikings with 10 points.
Lions rally past Wildcats
BROOKVILLE Ð After a poor start at Franklin County plagued by turnovers, the Lions rallied in the third quarter to win 47-43.
Rushville trailed the host Wildcats 15-7 after the first quarter and 25-12 at the half. Whatever head coach Brian Bowen discussed in the locker room at the half made a huge turnaround for the Lions. Rushville outscored the Wildcats 26-10 in the frame to grab a 38-35 lead.
The hot shooting hand in the third came from Mitch Laird. The junior guard drained four 3-pointers (three on consecutive possessions) for his 12 points in the game.
The Lions put the comeback, road victory away in the fourth quarter.
Hunter Orme and Cameron Cox both were in double figures for the Lions with 11 points each. Nate Niehoff added seven. Alex Yurack had five and Nate Hoeing hit a free throw to round out the Rushville scoring.
The Wildcats were led by the 13 points of Dylan Cregar. Skyler McCool chipped in with nine and Brett Ortman had eight.
In the junior varsity game, the Lions lost a tight game 58-57 in overtime.
Bryce Dye led the Lions with 14 points. Brad Busald chipped in with seven points. Jon Seals, Ricky Thompson and Nathan Borders all had eight points.
Sam Beavers finished with six and Alex Yurack had two.
