RUSHVILLE — Visiting Connersville controlled the first half, but the Lady Lions controlled the second half en route to the 57-50 victory Wednesday in Memorial Gym. The Lady Lions improve to 5-2 while the Lady Spartans drop to 4-2.

Connersville had the most talented individual player on the floor in Tierra Huntsman. The Lady Spartan senior gave the Lady Lions trouble the entire 32 minutes with her offensive ability. Huntsman led all scorers with 32 points. But the Lady Lions had the better team on this night.

Rushville’s adjustments at the half were the difference as the Lady Lions outscored the Lady Spartans 22-10 in the third quarter and 38-25 in the second half en route to the victory.

Connersville took the 13-8 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Spartans got a pair of 3-pointers from Kenzie Weston and five points from Huntsman in the frame. Keragan Niehoff opened the scoring for the Lady Lions. Kelsi Ash scored in the paint as the Lady Lions took advantage of their team size. Trailing 11-5, Niehoff scored again inside. Mikayla Dougherty’s free throw capped the first quarter.

Four straight Dougherty free throws opened the second quarter as the Lady Lions got within one point. Rushville later tied the game at 15-15 on a traditional three-point play by Sarah Cook. Huntsman answered with a 3-pointer to give the Lady Spartans the lead. Her triple just before the horn put the Lady Spartans up 25-19 at the half.

The third quarter was all Rushville. The Lady Lions opened the half on a 13-3 run. Dougherty’s 3-pointer and a Niehoff free throw capped the run with Rushville leading 32-28. After the Lady Spartans tied the game at 32-32, the Lady Lions went on a 7-1 spurt. Mackenzie Campbell started the run and Kaley Flannery’s 3-pointer ended. Dougherty’s bucket late in the quarter had the Lady Lions in front 41-35 heading to the fourth quarter.

The Lady Spartans made a couple runs at the Lady Lions. A Huntsman drive to the bucket cut the deficit to 44-41 and two Huntsman free throws later got Connersville within one at 46-45. Rushville never let the Lady Spartans take the lead. The Lady Lions got another three-point play from Cook and then sealed the win at the charity stripe, hitting 8-of-12 over the final two minutes of the game.

Dougherty led the Lady Lions with 14 points. Cook was next with 11. Weston finished with 10 points to back-up Huntsman’s 32 for the Spartans.

In the first game, Brooke Niehoff’s half-court buzzer beater at the end of the second quarter gave the Lady Lions a 21-20 lead at the break. McKenzie Woolston’s 3-pointer opened the third quarter as the Lady Lions outscored Connersville 11-2 in the frame en route to the 39-29 win.

Makayla Herbert led the Lady Lions with 11 points. Amanda Cobb led Connersville with 12.
