RUSHVILLE —  It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win. The Lady Lions overcame turnovers to knock off a poor shooting Lady Cougar squad 52-39 Saturday.

A rough shooting day for the Lady Cougars aided in the cause for the Lady Lions. Greenfield-Central missed its first nine free throws and hit just 8-of-23 from the charity stripe in the game. The Lady Lions on the other hand, connected on 26-of-36 free throws in the game.

A low-scoring first half saw a total of 33 points combined by the two teams. Four points by Rushville’s Sarah Cook gave the Lady Lions the early lead. Greenfield countered with four straight by Shelby Oldham to put the Lady Cougars up 6-4.  Buckets by Keragan Niehoff and Cook gave the lead back to the Lady Lions. Niehoff’s rebound bucket had the Lady Lions on top 10-6 after one quarter.

The Lady Cougars scored the first six points of the second quarter. Oldham scored and after a steal and bucket by Emily Koers, Oldham found Sara Jones with the assist to give the Lady Cougars a 12-10 lead.

Rushville responded with the next eight points to lead 18-12. Three points from Greenfield’s Shelby Davis had the half-time score at 18-15.

Greenfield’s Jones opened the second half with a bucket, but the Lady Lions answered with a 7-0 run. Niehoff had five points in the run. A 3-pointer by Oldham stopped the run, but Niehoff scored again on the inside to put the lead at 27-20.

With the lead at five, Cook drained a pair from the line and Mikayla Dougherty hit from behind the arc to extend the lead to 10 points. After five straight points by the Lady Cougars, Niehoff’s two free throws sent the game to the fourth with Rushville leading 34-27.

The fourth quarter was largely spent at the charity stripe. The teams combined to shoot 31 free throws in the quarter. Rushville scored 14 of its 18 points in the frame from the line. Mackenzie Campbell hit 9-of-12 in the fourth to help seal the win.

For the Lady Lions, Niehoff and Cook led the way with 15 points. Oldham led the Lady Cougars with 13 points.
