Lions advance five to regional

RUSHVILLE — The journey for wrestlers in the IHSAA state tournament began Saturday in the sectional. The Lions traveled to South Dearborn and finished fifth as a team and qualified five wrestlers for this weekend’s regional at Richmond.

Connersville claimed the team title with 198 points. East Central took second with 162 followed by Milan 146, Batesville 138, Rushville 130, South Dearborn 125.5, Union County 84, Lawrenceburg 80, Franklin County 79.5 and Oldenburg Academy 25.5.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the regional.

Rushville had two champions and three third place finishers.

Blake Wood won the sectional title at 138 pounds. Wood (26-8) defeated Robby Marschand of Connersville in the title match by the final of 11-7.

Joe Garland was the other Lion champion as he won the title at 285. Garland (31-1) pinned Cody Phillips of Connersville in 2:55 to claim the title.

Bailey Ford finished third at 113. Ford (23-10) defeated Nathan Hand of Milan 12-4 for third place honors.

Garrett Hittle took third at 170. Hittle (29-3) won by technical fall 19-2 over Josh Orschell of Franklin County and ended the day by defeating Batesville’s Will Amberger by injury default.

The final regional qualifier was Robbie Hadley, taking third at 220. Hadley (25-8) avenged earlier losses by defeating John Marvel of Connersville 13-6 and pinning Dustin Conety of South Dearborn in 2:55 to earn third place.

Also placing for the Lions included Zach Roszell (15-20) fifth at 106, Cory Judd (16-9) sixth at 132, Doug Cohee (16-14) sixth at 160, James McLaughlin (13-9) fifth at 182 and Tristenn Miller (18-11) fifth at 195.

Competing, but not placing for the Lions included Trey Newton-Gossett at 120 and Jacob Lambert at 152

Wrestling starts at 9:30 a.m. at the regional Saturday. Wrestlers that win their first match will move on to the semistate.
