Lions finish sixth at New Palestine

Rushville has two champions

NEW PALESTINE — The Lions finished sixth at the New Palestine Open Saturday. The Lions did have two individual weight class champions in Garrett Hittle and Tristenn Miller.

Hittle opened his tournament run in the 182 class with a 1:00 pin of Beech Grove’s Littlejohn. In the second round, Hittle pinned New Palestine’s Shannahan in 1:21. A 3:43 pin of Martinsville’s Scroggs put Hittle up against Roncalli’s Marc Roland. Hittle pinned Roland in 2:46 to reach the final. Hittle capped his perfect day with a 4:30 pin of East Central’s Dario Guintini.

Miller began his run at 220 with a 2:27 pin of Elkins from Columbia City. In the second round, Miller pinned Beech Grove’s Elliott in 1:53. Miller then won a 4-3 decision over East Central’s Moore. In the semifinal, Miller defeated Clayton Scroggs of Martinsville 3-0. Miller then claimed the title with a pin of New Palestine’s Noah Grable in 1:39.

Rushville’s Jakob Lambert took second place at 170. Lambert pined New Palestine’s Weber in 2:45 in the first round, lost 10-6 to Beech Grove’s Collins in the second round, lost by fall to Hess of Martinsville in the third round, defeated East Central’s Kameron Gick in the semifinal and lost to Hess again in the final.

Zach Roszell took third place at 113. He had a win by pin (3:53) over Martinsville’s Latham in the first round and win by forfeit in the second round. Roszell pinned Roncalli’s Josh Haitt in the third place match in 4:42.

Nick Hornaday took third for the Lions at 285. Hornaday defeated New Palestine’s Andrew Yazel in the third place match 6-1.

Finishing fourth for the Lions was Bailey Ford at 120. Preston Bowling finished fifth for the Lions at 152. Randy Collyer (106), Jaykeb Thorp (145), Grant McLaughlin (160) and Walker Meckes (195) all finished sixth for the Lions. Matthew Fogg was seventh at 138.

The Lions return home Jan. 23 to face Triton Central.
