JV Lady Lions capture tourney title

FRANKLIN — The junior varsity Lady Lions won the title at Franklin with wins over Indian Creek and Franklin.

In the semifinal, the Lady Lions jumped out to an 11-2 lead after the first quarter. Ellie Sammons had the hot hand early, scoring nine of her 15 points in the first frame.

The Lady Lions extended the lead to 18-7 at the half. McKenzie Woolston hit from behind the 3-point arc and Sammons and Tayler Koors added a bucket for the Lady Lions.

Rushville outscored the Lady Braves 16-12 in the second half to post the 34-19 victory.

Following Sammons’ 15 points for the Lady Lions was Kayla Fogg six, Koors four, Kayla Aldridge four, Woolston three and Markley two.

In the championship game, the Lady Lions outscored the Lady Cubs 17-8 to rally for the 34-32 victory and the title.

Two Brooke Niehoff free throws was all for the Lady Lions in the first quarter as Franklin led 5-2. Rushville outscored the Lady Cubs 11-6 in the second to lead 13-11 at the half. Sammons had five points and Woolston four in the second quarter.

Another slow offensive quarter by the Lady Lions saw Franklin grab a 24-17 lead heading to the final frame. Woolston and Alisha Markley both had six points in the fourth to help rally the Lady Lions.

For the game, Woolston finished with 12 points to lead the way followed by Sammons 10, Markley six, Fogg four and Niehoff two.
