---- — This may be the best time of the year for college football fans.

Some of the best match-ups of the season will take place over the next few weeks.

The list of college bowl games is lengthy (35) with pretty obscure games dotting the calendar prior to Christmas, but it gets better leading up to the National Championship game on Jan. 6, 2014.

With not a lot of time to watch college football, an attempt is made by me to keep pace with the state schools. How about the Boilers and Hoosiers? You won’t find them among the list of 70 teams playing, but you will find football powers Louisiana-Lafayette and Middle Tennessee.

You will find Ball State and Notre Dame. The Cardinals finished the season with a mark of 10-2 and will play Arkansas State (not Indiana or Purdue) in the GoDaddy Bowl on Jan. 5. The Fighting Irish (8-4) will battle Rutgers (6-6) in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 28.

Despite not knowing much about many of the teams this bowl season, it did not keep me from taking a shot at picking a few winners against Bryan Helvie of the Batesville Herald Tribune.

I have picked a couple upsets in an attempt to get more right than my counterpart in Batesville.
