Sports concussion study expanded

BLOOMINGTON (AP) — A $429,000 federal grant will allow Indiana University to expand research to detect sports-related concussions to more sports.

IU said Wednesday that researchers at its School of Optometry received the National Institutes of Health grant to study mild traumatic brain injury in IU and high school athletes. It will fund development of a portable sideline eye tracker that can be used to test eye movements of athletes during competition as a possible indicator for concussions.

Researchers Nicholas Port and Steven Hitzeman began their research four years ago with athletes on the IU men’s football and soccer teams and the women’s soccer team. The new funding will allow them to expand the research to other sports including men’s and women’s basketball. They also plan to work with high school programs.

Saban: ‘There were no talks’ with Texas

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama coach Nick Saban and the football team are moving on.

Saban has put to rest the speculation that he would replace Mack Brown at Texas by striking a new deal with Alabama.

For the third-ranked Crimson Tide, the focus is on getting over the loss to Auburn and trying to finish the season strong in the Jan. 2 Sugar Bowl against No. 11 Oklahoma.

Saban had said Friday night after agreeing to a new contract reportedly worth about $7 million a year that he planned to retire at Alabama.
