RUSHVILLE — TRAFALGAR - A big first half by the host Braves of Indian Creek was enough to knock off Rushville 28-6 in the opening round of the football sectional.

The Lions end the year at 1-9 while the Braves move to 8-2 and host Beech Grove in the sectional semifinal.

Indian Creek wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. The Braves took the opening possession of the game and turned it into points as Justin Cochran scored off the left side from 1-yard out. With 7:32 to play in the first quarter, the Braves led 7-0.

The Lions looked to respond on their first drive. Zach Turner and Garrett Hittle led the offensive attack from the ground. Quarterback Clay Tressler connected with Ashton Wilson and Shawn Valentine through the air as the Lions moved deep in Brave territory.

On fourth down near the 10 yard line, the Braves’ defense stepped up with an interception to end the threat.

After four punts by the teams, the Braves added to the lead with 4:01 left in the first half. Quarterback Matthew Wray connected with Cory Utecht to see the Braves up at the 6-yard line and running back Dokken Egenolf finished the drive on the ground for the touchdown. The Braves led 14-0.

With 3:47 on the clock, Indian Creek’s Keith Weddle intercepted a pass to give the ball back to the Braves. Wray then connected with Ethan Whitaker for the 42-yard touchdown strike to extend the lead to 21-0 with 2:58 to play in the second quarter.

Rushville fought back to get on the board. Hittle’s 2-yard touchdown run cut the deficit to 21-6 with :23.3 to play in the half.

Unfortunately for the Lions, the Braves struck again. A lateral and wide receiver pass moved the ball all the way inside the Lion 10-yard line and Wray hit Brenden Smith with the touchdown pass to end the half.

The Braves led 28-6 at the break.

Penalties and turnovers plagued both offenses in the second half as neither was able to put any points on the board.

Wray finished with 238 yards passing with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.
