Tourney time on the hardwood

For five teams in the Class 3A Sectional 29 at Greensburg, the road to a sectional title appears, on paper, to be a rough ride.

The Pirates are the host, the defending Class 3A state champs and the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A. Greensburg is the team to beat.

One glimmer of hope for the other five teams is that the Pirates have lost on their home court this season. Madison traveled to Greensburg and handed the Pirates their only loss on the season, 89-87 in overtime.

The Pirates open sectional action at 6 p.m. today against South Dearborn. The Pirates defeated the Knights (3-18) 92-30 at South Dearborn the second game of the season.

Greensburg is led by a host of returning players. Northwestern bound Bryant McIntosh averages 14.4 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game and 8.9 assists per game. Ball State recruit Sean Sellers averages 19.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg and 1.5 apg. The Pirates also have three other Division I talents in junior Ryan Welage, Macy Holdsworth (IU signee for baseball) and Colin Rigney (Ball State tennis signee).

Waiting in the wings for the winner of that game is Franklin County (9-11). The Pirates defeated the Wildcats 83-39 at Franklin County and 79-27 at Greensburg.

On the other side of the bracket, Rushville (10-9) takes on Lawrenceburg (11-9) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Lions are led by Cameron Cox with 14.5 ppg and 6.7 rpg. Nate Niehoff is back from injury and adds another dimension in the paint for the Lions. Alex Yurack is an athletic guard averaging 12.7 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 3.2 apg. The other big weapon for the Lions is the ability to knock down the 3-pointer. Mitch Laird, Ricky Thompson and Bryce Dye have shown this season their ability to step out and knock down shots.

The Lions defeated Lawrenceburg in the regular season 59-47. Rushville enters the sectional on a 4-game win streak and the Tigers have won 2-of-3.

The winner of the second game Tuesday gets Batesville (17-3) on Friday. The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 68-42 and the Lions 79-55.

Batesville is led by Bryan Hoeing (Louisville baseball commit) with 19.1 ppg, 7.7 rpg and 2.4 apg.

The sectional title game is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
