BLOOMINGTON - For high school athletes, it is a dream to compete in the state finals. For Rushville senior Joe Garland, he was able to experience the state finals twice in the same year.
Garland finished runner-up in the wrestling state finals this winter. In the spring, Garland won the regional title in the discus to advance to the state finals at Indiana University this past Friday night.
Garland did not have the showing he had hoped for, a toss of 129-3 at the state, but enjoyed the experience of another state finals and a great final season for the Lions.
“I was excited to win the regional and winning the conference meet as a team was cool,” Garland said.
Being on the Lion track team is definitely something he would recommend to other RCHS athletes looking for a spring sport.
“It was a lot of fun. You get to meet new people and try new things and the coaches are fun to be around,” Garland added.
Garland is headed to IUPUI next year to study Respiratory Therapy and he may look at competing in track.
“I would like to (compete in college). I need to talk to the coach and see if I can participate. I think that would be a lot of fun,” Garland said.
In addition to track, Garland participated in wrestling, football, Madricals and Student Council and was the 2013 Class Treasurer and the Treasurer of the Spanish Club.
