GREENSBURG - The Lady Lions opened sectional action Tuesday against Madison and eliminated the Lady Cubs 6-0 to advance to the sectional semifinal. The Lady Lions (10-10) face Greensburg in the second semifinal following Batesville and South Dearborn.
The Lady Lions opened the game with a run in the top of the first. Catie Liggett singled to left and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Niehoff. With two outs, Riley Lanham’s double scored Liggett to make it 1-0.
Rushville’s Taylor Hoeing pitched for the Lady Lions and retired the first five Lady Cubs. Two walks in the second were all the Lady Cubs could get through two innings against Hoeing.
In the top of the third, Kylie Martindale doubled to lead off the inning. Liggett followed with a single to center and both runners moved up a base on a fielder’s choice. Shelbie Brown’s single scored both Martindale and Liggett to make it 3-0. Shelby Woods added a two-out single to score Brown to push the lead to 4-0.
Madison got a one-out hit from Bickers in the bottom of the third, but Hoeing struck out the next two Lady Cubs to move the game to the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth, Lanham hammered out her second double and moved to third on a throwing error. The Lady Lions were not able to add to the lead.
Madison threatened in the bottom of the fifth as Sonner walked and Harkney singled to right center. The Lady Cubs tried to score on the play, but the relay from Niehoff to Liggett to Lanham caught the baserunner at the plate. A strikeout and pop out ended the inning.
Madison got a double by Barnes in the sixth, but the Lady Cubs were not able to move her around.
Rushville added to the lead in the seventh. Liggett doubled and went to third on a double by Niehoff. Brown’s ground out scored Liggett and Lanham followed with an RBI single. Woods added a single before the Lady Cubs got out of the inning.
In the Lady Cubs’ final at=bat, Sonner drew a one-out walk, but a double play by the Lady Lions sealed the victory.
Rushville had six runs on 11 hits and one strike out.
Hoeing pitched all seven innings allowing no runs on three hits and four walks while striking out seven.
