Batesville shuts out Lady Lions on courts

RUSHVILLE — The Batesville High School tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 5-0 victory over the Rushville Lady Lions.

Batesville’s No. 2 singles player Lydia Olsen battled to the very end to defeat Rosella Troyer in the three sets. The BHS sophomore lost the first set 6-4, but bounced back to win the second 6-2 to force a third. Olsen got up early in the third set and closed it out 6-1.

Senior Ellen Heppner and junior Sarah Hoseus gave the Lady Bulldogs wins at the other two singles positions. Heppner was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Allison Wainwright at No. 1, while Hoseus defeated Sarah Harpring 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

The No. 1 doubles team of Emily Helvie and Ali Meyer got off to a slow start and fell behind 3-1 in the first set. The senior duo regrouped and went on to post a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Jill Yager and Casey Yager.

At No. 2 doubles, Kelli Hartman and Brooke Bradford were 6-1, 6-0 winners over Nici Martin and Lucy Dyer.

“Despite the lopsided loss most of our girls played well tonight. They are playing hard and are managing to stay out on the court longer,” Coach

Heuer noted. “Batesville is the strongest serving team we’ve seen so far this year and hopefully we gained some valuable experience from the match.”

Batesville won the junior varsity contest 7-0.

For the Lady Lions, Haley Riddell lost 8-2. Sharah Hershberger lost 8-6. Sarah Schombert and Breanna Ison lost 8-2. Bridgette Welter and Abby Whitaker fell 8-6. Larissa Dunn and Riko Itakura lost 8-2. Natalie Miller and Courtney Hall fell 8-0. Kelly Lee and Samantha Fowler lost 6-0.
