Speidel takes feature win

Mother Nature finally cooperated on Saturday evening when the Midwest TQ Racing League presented by Jenmarco.com made their first appearance of the season at the Shelby County Fairgrounds in Shelbyville. Current point leader Nick Speidel continued his dominance in the three-quarter midgets and Kyle Trickle saw victory lane for the first time in the MTQRL 600cc sidewinder feature.

Defending champion Tate Martz started the evening off by topping the twenty-eight car field in qualifications with a lap of 17.68 seconds around the quarter mile fairgrounds oval. Martz went on to win the Jackson Oil & Solvents Duel for Fuel and Perfect North Slopes heat winners were Logan Arnold, Christopher Mann, Brett Hankins and Ronnie Combs. Sophomore driver Dustin Wheeldon won the semi feature.

In the 25-lap feature, Speidel started fourth and snatched the lead from Elwood Sanitarium Haunted Attraction polesitter Ronnie Combs on lap four. Speidel went on to lead the final 22 laps scoring his fourth feature win of the season over Combs, Hankins, Martz, and Will Nedderman. Mann, Matt Hedrick, Tristan Maggart, Robbie Roland and Matt Lux completed in the top ten.

Rob Walton was the Indy Race Parts Hard Charger advancing seven positions to finish 12th. Aaron Percell was the only one of the four rookie drivers competing to make the feature and was named the Tony Stewart Racing Rookie of the Race. Rookie Dakota Megel suffered mechanical woes and was the Duane & Sonja Alexander Hard Luck Driver.

Kyle Trickle took the lead from Shane Williamson on lap six and beat the rest of the field to the checkered flag to win the 600cc sidewinder feature. Williamson finished second followed by Nathan Toney, Brad Landis, Brett Waggoner, Kati Waggoner, Rico Dobbins and Callie Wolsiffer, Heat winners were Trickle and Williamson.

The next race on the MTQRL schedule will be August 10th at the Montpelier Motor Speedway in Montpelier. The TQ’s and sidewinders return to Shelbyville on August 17th.
