Mefford, Hughes and Dossey Mt. Lawn victors

Brandon Mefford of Spiceland continued his winning ways at Mt. Lawn over the weekend taking the Van Hoy Oil series Late Model feature for his fourth win this season and the third in a row. David McConnell of Shirley led the first three laps from his front row starting position as he beat newcomer Randy Anderson of Knightstown down the backstretch on lap one.

Mefford moved into the lead on lap 4 and led the rest of the way. On lap 5 another first timer this year Tracy Burroughs of Ingles driving a Mopar product dropped out of the race with rear end troubles. Also on lap 5, 14-year-old Jack Dossey III of Indianapolis and Jacob Wyman of Noblesville got together battling for fifth position resulting in a cut tire on Dossey’s ride forcing him into the pits. Lap 5 also saw Jason Thompson of Shirley move into second and set his sights on Mefford. Mefford proved to be the class of the field as he held Thompson at bay over the final 25 laps for a six car length lead.

Thompson did finish second followed by Wyman, McConnell, Bill Pierce of New Castle, Kent Carson of Richmond, Anderson, Dossey and Burroughs. Thompson set fast time in qualifications at 17.203. Lenny and Belva Tungate and Long John Silver sponsored the Late Model dash that was captured by Dossey for his first win at Mt. Lawn in his Ellis Late Model. Mefford and McConnell won the heats.

Larry Hughes Jr. of Greensboro took the win the in the Van Hoy Oil Hornet division for his fifth feature win of the year. Donnie Mullis of Greenfield led the first two laps giving way to Mark Jennings of Richmond on lap 3.

Rodney Sutton of New Castle led lap 6 with Jennings taking back over on lap 7. Jennings’ engine developed a problem after crossing the starting line on lap 11. That gave the lead to Hughes on lap 12 who led the rest of the way. On lap 15 Jeff Sorrell of New Castle tangled with another car on the backstretch wend off the track and disappeared from view sliding toward Duck Creek.
