New hockey team to play at Indiana fairgrounds

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The owners of a new minor league hockey franchise plan to make the renovated Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum its home starting next year.

The new East Coast Hockey League franchise will mark a return of professional hockey to Indianapolis since its last team folded in 2004.

Fairgrounds officials announced Monday that the ownership group led by Carmel businessman Jim Hallett has signed a five-year agreement to play in the arena, which is undergoing a $63 million renovation. The team is to announce its name Tuesday and start playing in October 2014.

The Indianapolis team will join a league that now has 22 franchises across the country, including teams in Fort Wayne, Evansville and Cincinnati.

The renovated Fairgrounds Coliseum also will be home court for IUPUI’s basketball teams.
