Amanda Meyer: The true team player

With all the focus on wins and losses, sometimes the best parts of high school athletics gets lost—enjoying the sport, being a part of a team and friends.

One RCHS student-athlete that has not lost her focus on having fun and just wanting to be a part of the team is tennis player Amanda Meyer.

Meyer is a senior on the Lady Lion tennis team and has played in just one varsity match in her four years with the program. But that doesn’t matter to her, it is all about enjoying the sport and having fun.

“I just really like playing. It’s fun to play. I don’t care where I play, from the top to the bottom of JV, as long as I get to play,” Amanda said.

That great outlook and attitude has been seen by her coaches.

“Amanda exemplifies what a team player truly is. She brings enthusiasm and energy to the tennis team,” RCHS assistant coach Brian Bess said.

Head coach Theresa Heuer agrees.

“She is one of my favorites. She is very coachable and tries everything that we ask of her,” Coach Heuer said. “She is very level-headed and I would take a team full of Amanda Meyers.”

Meyer got her first start with tennis from a family member.

“My Grandpa got me started and I thought I’d play because of him,” Amanda said. “He got me my first racket.”

As she entered RCHS, she knew she wanted to be involved in a sport and tennis was the right fit for her.

“I wanted to play a sport in high school and thought tennis would be fun,” Amanda added.

Four years later, she is still playing and learning tennis and enjoying it.

“I really enjoy learning about the game and getting better each year,” Amanda said. “I also like the bus rides. We have a lot of fun on those.”

At practice Friday, the phrase “go Da” was called out several times. “Da” is a nickname given to her by fellow senior Katie Hood while playing doubles last year.
