Messer presents Congressional Scholars Award to Yager, Banks

More than 100 students receive 8th Grade Congressional Scholars Award

RUSHVILLE — (Washington, D.C.)— Keith Yager and Karyn Banks received the 8th Grade Congressional Scholars award from Congressman Luke Messer as the top male and female students at Benjamin Rush Middle School.

Keith and Karyn were joined by more than 100 other 8th grade students from Southeast Indiana to receive the award recognizing their academic excellence. The event was organized and sponsored by Hillenbrand in Batesville.

“It is important that we recognize students like Keith and Karyn for their achievements and encourage them to continue their success both inside and outside of the classroom,” said Congressman Messer. “As a young student, I participated in a similar program led by Richard Lugar, who was a U.S. Senator at that time. That program had a positive impact on my life and inspired me toward public service. I hope this program inspires these students toward leadership as well.”

As a state representative, Messer authored dropout reform legislation and currently serves on the Education Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Luke Messer is the Congressman for Indiana’s 6th Congressional District, a 19 county region of east-central and southeastern Indiana comprised of manufacturing and agricultural communities. Elected President of the Republican Freshman Class by his peers, Messer serves on the House Committees on Budget, Foreign Affairs, and Education & the Workforce.

Luke and his wife Jennifer have two daughters, one son and three dogs. Luke has also served as an elder at his church and is the author of a children’s book about Indiana titled “Hoosier Heart.” To learn more about Luke Messer, log on to www.Messer.House.gov.
