Grandma Katie Reading Endowment

RUSHVILLE — Just like clockwork, books are turned in at the end of the school year. So when a class took home a note indicating their child was bringing home a book and it was theirs to keep, a special legacy was being carried out.

Mrs. Carla Angle, Rushville Elementary School East kindergarten teacher, did just that! Her mother, also known as Grandma Katie, was involved for many years with the Foster Grandparent Program in New Castle. Before her death in 2007, Mrs. Angle’s sister and brother in law, Mike and Patty Boyles, established the Grandma Katie Reading Endowment. The purpose of the endowment was to put books in the hands of young children. Grandma Katie loved her students and it was very important to her that they were successful readers. Her legacy continues every year as money is given to classroom teachers in order to provide books for their students.

This is the first year Mrs. Angle’s class has received money from this fund. While each child received a book to take home, books were also purchased that will remain in the classroom.  “I hope the children enjoy their books. I know Grandma Katie would have been so pleased,” stated Mrs. Angle.

The school year has come to a close and various activities will fill our student’s lives. Thanks to people like Grandma Katie, a book will be close at hand to be a part of those summer days. This gift of reading is one more reason why Rush County Schools are a great place to be.

Marianne Scott is the Legacy Fund director/Information officer with Rush County Schools.
