---- — With jobs less secure, technology more advanced, and our school aged kids learning things earlier and faster to keep up with the ever demanding job markets: What parent wouldn’t want to give their child the best head start they could? Let that head start begin early with your local HEAD START program.
Our local HEAD START preschool program is beginning enrollment for the 2014-15 school year with two dates to visit both locations and check out the programs and services they offer. Open house at the Milroy Elementary location will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 11. Open house at the Booker T. location will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 17. Children applying must be 3 or 4 by Aug. 1.
Please bring with you to complete registration: the birth certificate of the child enrolling, the shot record for that child, 12 months proof of household income, social security numbers for all living in your home, and the child’s health insurance card.
Juice and cookies will be served at both open houses, so come out and meet teachers Mrs. Workman and Ms. Copp, check out our classrooms, and see what HEAD START can offer.
“While HEAD START eligibility is largely income-based, each local program includes other eligibility criteria such as disabilities and services to other family members. Families must earn less than 130% of the federal poverty level. Up to 10% of enrollment can be from higher income families and 10% of enrollment comes from fully servicing children with disabilities,” Mrs. Workman said. So all families are encouraged to apply. Those who can not come to either open house can also contact Mrs. Workman at (765) 932-4403 to schedule a time for registration.
“Participants can expect that the children enrolled in the HEAD START program receive pre-school education set to the national standards for all U.S. pre-schools. Health services include screenings, health check-ups, and dental check-ups. Social Services provide family advocates to work with parents and assist them in accessing community resources for low-income families. I have worked at HEAD START for eight years and I absolutely believe in the program. We are designed to get the children ready for kindergarten and through training and higher education levels, teachers are equipped to do that,” Workman said.
HEAD STARTS mission statement is simply this: “HEAD START: helping people, changing lives, building communities.”
Free field trips to local area businesses, farms, banks, and the post office give hands on head start opportunities to children so they see how their communities run.
