So many words – so little time

RUSHVILLE — The Accelerated Reader program (AR) is a computer-based, teacher-guided program intended to supplement existing classroom literacy programs from preschool through grade 12. This program is designed to engage students in an abundance of reading practice with current material at individually appropriate reading levels. The program also rewards student success in reading achievement.

There are three steps to using Accelerated Reader. First, students choose and read a fiction or non-fiction book, textbook, or magazine. Teachers monitor reading including guided, paired, literature-based, and textbook reading. Second, students take a quiz.Teachers can create their own quizzes for those not available in Accelerated Reader or use the ones provided with the program. Some of the many benefits of the Accelerated Reader program are that student’s individual reading level is accessed, titles of books are provided for their level, and then they are assessed at the completion of the book. Third, the teacher receives information that is intended to assist, motivate reading, monitor progress, and target instruction. Reports regarding reading level and comprehension skills are available through the software.  The reports provide additional information to students regarding reading rates, amount of reading, and other variables related to reading.

This is where Cole Dixon from Rushville Elementary School East, Mrs. Ford’s 5th grade class, comes into the picture. Cole has done much more than just excel with the AR Program. He read 2,351,241 words during the school year. We extend congratulations to Cole for his hard work and know that he’ll be at it again next year as those words accumulate.
