Begin with the end in mind

The Commit to Graduate program is an initiative to address the growing student dropout rate across America. It encourages students to not only strive for their high school diploma but also to set a goal for the next stage of life.

Jostens has partnered with schools to bring together this program with key messaging to communities, educators and students emphasizing the importance and value of a high school diploma. This research-based initiative also focuses on helping students prepare for the future by setting a career goal beyond high school, which might include trade schools, the military or college. This is the fourth year that Rushville Consolidated High School has participated in the Commit to Graduate program.

On Tuesday, Aug.13, approximately 223 students from the Class of 2017 gathered in Laughlin Auditorium to think about their senior year . . . now! With just five days into their High School journey, many are beginning to realize Middle School and High School are two very different ventures. Schedules, buildings, the learning environment and extra- curricular opportunities have all changed. The basketball scenario offered was this; “Think of it this way – you are already in the 4th quarter and now is your opportunity to make it count.” Whatever lies ahead, whether it is college, the military or entering the job market, a High School diploma is not optional. All were encouraged to take their GPA’s seriously, get involved in all that RCHS has to offer and to make attendance their foremost priority.

A banner stating that all who signed were committed to graduating awaited this class on stage. Just like graduation, this commitment was met with a handshake and a smile. This visible sign of the Class of 2017’s intent to graduate will hang in the Hall of Rushville Consolidated High School. The signatures of this class are their first and important mark on Rushville Consolidated High School. We know there will be other great things coming from the Class of 2017 and look forward to the day they shake hands again as they receive their diplomas.
