Angel The Church Mouse

Hi, all you kind folks in Readership Land,

Praying that “all is well” for you and yours as we near the end of 2013. Many have lost loved ones and in need of comfort.

In my scrampin’ about I came across a hymn that made my whiskers tremble and my eyes tear up. I wanted to know how the author, Horatio G. Spafford, 1828-1888, came about to pen such words.

With pen in hand, words came to this father as his ship crossed over the spot on the Atlantic ocean ( “shiver me timbers”) where his wife, Anna, and their four little daughters were on a steam ship, Nov. 22,1873. The Ville du Havre, was struck by an iron sailing vessel, Loch Eam. Their four little girls perished along with many others and there were few survivors, one being his wife.

How could a grieving father be able to maintain his faith in such devastating bereavement and not lose his faith? In 2 Peter 1:1 you read of precious faith allotted to all believers to believe steadfast!

The words of the first stanza in, “It Is Well With My Soul, “ explains it. Remember, the father is on a sailing ship and the water is all about in a vast ocean:

When peace like a river attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot Thou hast taught me to say,

“It is well, it is well with my soul.”

May it be well with your soul.
