Angel The Church Mouse

Hi, all you kind folks in Readership Land,

In my scrampin’ about I came across a hymn and thought, now, how did this author come to pen such? This author lived in an interesting and challenging time in history. “Shiver me whiskers,” being thrown into The Tower of London and living to tell. “Mercy.” To think words penned by Thomas Ken, (1637-1711) are sung by Christians all over the world as a doxology!

“Praise God, from all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host ; Praise Father, Son, and Holy ghost. A-men.”

This simple four lines stanza is said to be sung more often than any four lines written since the psalmist David. The author, by 1674, wrote three hymns and inserted copies of each in his manuals he wrote for boys at Winchester College in England as a chaplain. He had admonished the boys, “ Be sure and sing early in the morning and in the night.” Back in 1667 he was encouraging his charges. By the thirteenth stanza he wrote the last one which is now used for Doxologies.

In 1679 the author was made chaplain by rollicking King Charles II. King Charles liked the little chaplain for telling him his faults and made him a bishop in 1685.

King Charles’ successor, James II, had him and six other bishops taken to the Tower of London. They had refused to take oaths to his Declaration of Indulgence. They were acquitted and the little bishop went into seclusion until his death at 74 years. His possessions being an old lute and an old horse. As he was lowered to his grave, per his request, by six of the poorest men of the parish, his friends sang, “Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow.”

“Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, And does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.” Psalm 40:4 NKJV

Until the next time.

Blessings,

Angel The Church Mouse
