Milroy Research Literary Club

RUSHVILLE — The Milroy Research Literary Club met Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the home of Valerie Wilson. Vice-president Wilson presided in the absence of the president.

For the program Valerie Wilson reviewed the book, “Hetty Green, Richest Woman in America,” by Janet Wallach. Hetty was born in 1840 in New Bedford, Mass., into a family whose patriarch valued money above all else. She spent her life trying to gain success and wealth in an effort to gain the love and approval of her father. She received one million dollars upon his death and from that point on worked very hard to increase her fortune through shrewd investments and good business decisions. She did not flaunt her wealth and often wore old clothes in order to appear an ordinary person. She did marry after signing a prenuptial agreement, but left her husband after he lost $100,000 of her money through a bad investment. Her obsession with money lasted all of her life and at her death in 1916 she left an estate valued at 100 million dollars.

Members answered roll call with several showing Christmas mementos from the past that were special to them. The minutes of the November meeting were given by Pat Carrigan, secretary. Carolyn Cleland reported a balance of $91.51 in the treasury. The meeting adjourned following the Club Collect and the Rainy Day Fund collection.

A gift exchange was enjoyed by all and delicious seasonal refreshments were served by the hostess.

The club will next meet March 12, 2013, at the home of Nancy Leising and Carolyn Cleland will present the program.
