NARFE hears about unclaimed property

Chapter 0813 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees met on June 18 at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Greensburg for its monthly meeting. The meeting was opened by vice president Rita Flack welcoming those present and followed with Kay Hineman leading the group with the Pledge of Allegiance and the invocation.

For the monthly program vice president Flack introduced Amy Wardlow and Jeff Cummings from the Indiana State Attorney General’s office. Their main area of responsibilities is unclaimed property. Occasionally you will see listings of people with unclaimed property in newspapers and Indiana’s web site, both of which they maintain. They stated that you should avoid companies/web sites that will research this information for you, as they require a fee for this service or a few are outright scams. Individuals can research for themselves at the state’s web site, IndianaUnclaimed.com and nationally at Unclaimed.org. Most states only maintain unclaimed property for 10 years but Indiana maintains for 25 years before it is turned over the state’s treasurers’ office, after which cannot be claimed. For individuals claiming unclaimed property, there are rigorous background checks and documents required. During the meeting, members in attendance had their names entered into the state’s web site, but unfortunately nobody was lucky. Both reps stated the most enjoyable part of their duties is when unclaimed property is distributed. Thanks to Amy and Jeff for their program.

Following the program, a business meeting with the secretary’s minutes and treasurer’s report being read and approved. Other chapter business had the legislative officer, service officer and other committee reports given.

The attendance prize was won by Tony Meo. Birthdays of Gertrude Wickliff, Joan Fix and Joe Brown were acknowledged with the singing of happy birthday.

The next meeting will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 16 at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Greensburg with optional lunch following the meeting.

If you are retired employee or currently an active employee and have an interest in attending chapter meetings, join us at our next meeting.
