Rushville Republican

RUSHVILLE — Chapter 0813 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees met Jan. 15 at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Greensburg for its monthly meeting. President Eva Stone opened the meeting by welcoming those present and followed with Kay Hineman leading the group with the Pledge of Allegiance and the invocation.

For the monthly program, Rita Flack introduced Mr John Wilson, director of rehabilitation services at the Decatur County Hospital in Greensburg. Mr Wilson gave a presentation on Falls and Home Safety. Mr Wilson stated falls are the leading cause of accidents in the older generation with 33 percent of persons over 65 suffering falls and 50 percent of people over 80 experiencing a fall. Of falls, 75 percent occur in or near the home and 55% perdent of those falls occur in the home. Causes of falls are many with aging, mostly, being the main factor – the longer you live the more likely something will happen. With aging, factors such as vision, muscle strength, balance, medications and many more factors will increase risks of falling. Some factors on how to help reduce the risks of falling is exercise, the easiest and generally the best method is walking and if available, water (swimming pool) activities. Home safety factors are many and varied with such examples as clutter, pets, wet floors, lack of night lights and thinking you can still do workloads like when you were younger. It is most important to keep a cell phone with you at all times or if available use a “Lifeline”, in case of an emergency. Thanks to Mr Wilson for a very informative program.

President Stone followed with a business meeting with the secretary and treasurer’s reports being read and approved. Other chapter business had the legislative officer, service officer, vice president and other committee reports.

The birthday of Kay Hineman was acknowledged. The attendance prize was won by Terry Wilds. Marilyn Eback, a member from the Indianapolis chapter, was a guest of Jack and Joan Fix.

The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Greensburg with optional lunch following the meeting.
