Rush County Retired Teachers Association

RUSHVILLE — On Dec. 6, 2012, 60 members and guests of the Rush County Retired Teachers Association met at noon at the Superintendent’s office. The program was presented by the 5th and 6th graders of St. Mary’s School, directed by Fran Doyle, and accompanied by Mary Jane Truster. This included new and old Christmas songs, and a sing-a-long which was enjoyed by all. President Bud King then opened the meeting with the Pledge to the Flag, followed by a prayer by Marc Ellis. Sue Templin, our area representative, was introduced, Micki Geise and David Young were recognized as our newest retirees; and Mary Jane Truster introduced her daughter Carol Lempke, visiting from Pennsylvania.

Phil Voiles has volunteered to take over e-mailing of minutes from Kathy Wright. Members were told that if they had not received a notice by the 15th of the month of the meeting, to contact their caller or Bud. The Treasurer’s report and the Secretary’s minutes were approved. Sharon Wooley thanked her calling committee, and Shirley Jones collected volunteer hours. Addresses for associate members were distributed, and everyone was encouraged to send Christmas cards to each and to thank them for supporting the retired teachers.

Sue Templin then spoke of the COLA, the 13th check, those who have served in the military, and the 800 teachers statewide who receive less than $500 a month retirement. There will be a luncheon to meet with legislators in Indianapolis on Feb. 12, and Templin encouraged as many as possible to attend. Micki Geise then told of listening to children read in Kathy Schneider’s classroom, and said volunteers are welcome any morning from 9:30 until 10:00 a.m.

Jon Naylor won the 50/50 drawing, and graciously donated his share back to the organization. Brags for a quarter were heard from Louise Kendall, Pollly Brown, Barb Kendall, Marc and Evelyn Ellis, Marie King, Connie Schakel, Dick Moster, Ken Brashaber, Sue Templin, Tom and Claire Mercer and Bud King.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, March 28, at Center Christian Church at noon and Steve Mahan will present the program. Following the joke of the day, Happy Birthday was sung to those celebrating birthdays in October, November and December. The meeting was closed with the singing of “God Bless America” and “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”
