NARFE met in May

RUSHVILLE — Chapter 0813 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees met on May 21 at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Greensburg for its monthly meeting. The meeting was opened with a welcome by president Eva Stone followed by Kay Hineman leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and the invocation.

For the monthly program, one of our own, Rob McClintic, gave a program of his years as a staffer for different representatives and a senator in Washington D.C. Rob stated that he got his start for previous Congressman Phil Sharpe, working in the mail room and progressing to different staff jobs through the years and ended his career serving on Senator Debbie Stabenow’s staff. Rob stated that once you start as a staffer and though out your career, you start networking contacts and accumulating institutional knowledge, even minor items such as knowing where ice/vending machines are located and locations of different offices. All representatives receive the same basic operating budgets, whereas senators’ budgets are apportioned according to the population of their states. Larger populated states receive more than smaller states and staff size is larger for senators than representatives. Salaries of staffers are set by the individual senator or representative and normal workdays can be 10-11 hours a day (no overtime). With each election, if the staffer’s boss doesn’t get reelected or decides not to run for reelection, they are out of a job whereby the staffer has to use their networking contacts/resources to find a new congress person to apply to over again to get a new job. Thanks to Rob for his very informative program.

Following the program, a business meeting was held with the secretary and treasurer’s reports being read and approved. The legislative officer, service officer and other committee reports were given.

The attendance prize was won by Rita Emsweller.

The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Greensburg with optional lunch following the meeting.

If you are retired federal employee or currently an active employee and have an interest in attending chapter meetings, join us at our next meeting. For more information call 765-629-2720.
