Rushville Chapter DAR meets

The Rushville Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met at the home of Priscilla Winkler on Sept. 11. Regent Lisa Winship opened the meeting with the regular DAR ritual; Nancy Badger led the singing of the National Anthem. The President-General’s letter was read by Becky Webb, and Julie New house gave the National Defense report which concerned the return of the Vietnam veterans after the war ended 40 years ago. Phyllis Fecher was appointed secretary in lieu of Patty Cardill who will be unable to attend several of the coming meetings. Annual dues were collected, and the treasurer’s report given. Patricia Carrigan explained what Mitch Cassidy and his wife had done to improve the Hackleman Cabin during the summer.

Christmas stockings for veterans were passed out for the members to decorate and return at the November meeting. Lisa announced that Naturalization Court in Indianapolis would be on the following Thursday. American flags will be passed out to the new citizens by the local chapter. Julie discussed the upcoming day called “A Legacy of Giving Back” which will be hosted by the City of Rushville and Rush County Community Foundation on Sept. 26th; members were to RSVP by Sept. 18 if they were interested in attending. Several new names for membership were given.

Pat Carrigan presented the program on an article taken from the American Spirit, the Daughters of American Revolution magazine. The article was called “A Revolutionary Band of Brothers” and was about America’s oldest patriotic and hereditary organization, the Society of the Cincinnati. Continental Army officers founded it 230 years ago in May 1783; the Society was conceived by Henry Knox who was General George Washington’s master of artillery. Today the headquarters is an early 20th century mansion in Washington, D.C. where historians and genealogists use it as a resource. There are 4,000 members in the Society at this time.

The next meeting will be at noon on Oct. 12 at the Main Street Christian Church. Hostesses for the luncheon meeting will be the officers.
