Woman’s Christian Temperance Union Mid-Year Rally April 20

RUSHVILLE — The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union will be meeting for their Mid-Year Rally on Saturday, April 20, at the Akron Public Library in Akron, Ind. The Saturday meeting will convene at 9:30 a.m. with State President Sarah Ward presiding. Come early and have brunch and fellowship at 9 a.m. The day’s activities will conclude at 2:30 p.m. The theme for WCTU this year will be “Open Doors of Opportunity.”

Two guest speakers are on the agenda this year. During the morning session, Lynn Allyn Young, the author of “Beautiful,” a new biography of Midwest sculptor, Lorado Taft, will share photographs she took while researching his life. Taft sculpted several busts of Frances Willard, plaster medallions of her and her mother and a bronze plaque which hangs in the rotunda of the state capitol in Indianapolis. Young’s presentation will include details of other pieces located in Indiana, and the story of how she discovered an uncredited grave memorial in Indianapolis’ Crown Hill Cemetery.

Cheryl Roland of Marion is scheduled to speak during the afternoon session. She works closely with her husband, Dr. David G. Roland, superintendent of the Northeastern Indiana District Church of the Nazarene. Cheryl is an event planner and serves on a number of committees designed to promote, equip and encourage women in ministry. She has written numerous articles and is a contributing writer to three books. The theme of her speech will be, “Jesus is my Rock and my name is on the roll!”

Following the opening of the morning session by Miss Ward, Wanda Tupps, WCTU vice president from Warsaw, will conduct the singspiration with pianists Lois I. Helm and Ruth Woods. Rev. Terry Canfield will have devotions. Roll call will be conducted by Becky Stevens, recording secretary, of Kokomo. Lois Anderson of Kokomo and state treasurer, will present her report and conduct the Love Offering.

There will be a presentation by state directors and director James Knight will introduce the honorary members.

During the afternoon session which begins at 1:30 p.m., awards will be presented by Wanda Tupps, promotion director. The group, “By Grace” will present special music.

The meeting will conclude with a Friendship Circle and the benediction. All members are encouraged to attend the Mid-Year Rally on April 20.
