The Rushville Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met at the home of Patricia Carrigan on Saturday, April 13, 2013. There were 25 members and guests in attendance. Lisa Winship, regent, opened the meeting and led the regular DAR ritual. She welcomed the State Regent, Jeanie Hornung, and members from the Connersville and New Castle chapters as well as guests, Chris Spaulding and Allison Fritz. The President General’s message was read by Kristen Haas, and the National Defense Report was given by Patricia Carrigan. Libby Smith gave the treasurer’s report. Julie Newhouse gave the Flag Minute while Lisa gave the Indian Minute.
The State Conference will take place in Indianapolis from May 17 to 19. Several members will attend on Saturday, May 18. Patricia Carrigan and Kathy Wright will be the voting delegates while Julie Newhouse will be the alternate delegate. The Rushville Chapter will give U.S. flags to the new citizens at the Naturalization Court in Indianapolis on May 2. The chapter will be represented by Julie Newhouse. Nancy Badger reported that, while visiting relatives in New York, she was asked to be a guest at a DAR meeting in Long Island, and she thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Kay Pike noted that there was still room on the bus that will take members to Continental Congress in Washington in late June.
The program was given by Jeanie Hornung, State Regent. She discussed State Conference, the Newsletter that members had recently received, and Continental Congress. She told some of the history of the Daughters of the American Revolution and discussed the various buildings owned by DAR in Washington, D.C. She told about her own lineage in DAR: Her grandmother became a member of the Connersville chapter in 1939, and her mother, Kay Pike, became a member of the same chapter in 1966. She herself became a Junior member in 1977. She said that being involved in DAR had helped her grow as an individual through the years and had led to her becoming the State Regent. She asked those present to keep encouraging other women to join DAR.
The next meeting will be held on May 8 at the home of Kathy Wright.
