METAMORA — Gather up the family and head down to Metamora’s historic canal for a day of outdoor play at Kid’s Discount Day, scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10 on the grounds of the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site. Up to two children will ride the historic canal boat Ben Franklin III for half-price when an adult or senior pays general admission.
“Kid’s Discount Day is a chance for families to come out and have one last adventure on a horse-drawn canal boat before school begins,” said State Historic Sites East Region Program Manager Anne Fairchild. “Not only will kids have a discount option, but guests age 90 and older as well as children age two and younger will be admitted free.”
Metamora, full of eclectic antique shops and vendors, combined with the quaint and charming bed and breakfasts in surrounding Franklin County, makes for a great weekend destination. Visit www.franklincountyin.com for more information on the county. For more information on the Historic Site, please visit indianamuseum.org/whitewater or call 765.647.6512.
Whitewater Canal, one of the few remaining canals in Indiana, was built in the early 1800s and includes 56 locks to accommodate a gradual drop of nearly 500 feet. The 25-minute cruise passes the Duck Creek Aqueduct, a covered bridge that carries the canal 16 feet over Duck Creek. Boat rides begin at noon and leave the dock every hour. The last departure is at 4 p.m.
After the era of canal transportation ended, Whitewater Canal was used as a source of water power for the Metamora Grist Mill, which produces cornmeal the same today as it did more than 100 years ago. The mill is open to visitors Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The operation is closed on most holidays and will close for the year on Nov. 20. Admission is free.
