Posey Township officials oppose consolidation of services
Dear Editor:
The Advisory Board and Trustee of Posey Township, Rush County, Ind. are opposed to the consolidation of township and county services.
We understand there would be a county executive who would appoint people to the various offices.
What provision has been made for rural fire services? Under the present system of volunteers, service is provided quickly and efficiently to rural areas. The cost is not excessive.
The trustees presently are able to provide poor relief fairly because they know everyone in the community and can make decisions about who is truly needy.
The officials are currently elected by the people in the county and are accountable to their constituents. Appointed officials are not held accountable to the people they represent.
We are aware that the large cities have different needs and need to be administered differently. But one size does not fit all. The system we have in the rural communities is not broken. It is working quietly and efficiently.
Sincerely,
Lurinda Smith, Trustee
Dahl Petry, president, Advisory Board
Priscilla O. Winkler, secretary, Advisory Board
Rita Keaton, member, Advisory Board
