"Leaves of Memory" history book about Mountain Mission School compiled

Dear Editor:

Let me introduce myself. I am Mike Fitch, a former student of Mountain Mission School, Grundy, Va. I attended the school from 1968 to 1976 and I am now serving on the Alumni Association Board of directors as 2nd Vice President. The reason I wanted to contact you is the article about the school back in 2008. Which was about the Rushville group that makes the yearly trip to the school to help celebrate the Thanksgiving season with the children. I have fond memories of those times and the generosity of those who brought much anticipated joy and excitement to the campus of MMS.

For the past few months a dear friend of mine, Joyce Mize, also a former student and Alumni Association member, and I have worked on compiling a book of the history of the school. This book contains information from the very beginning of the school until this present time of 2009. The book includes a pictorial history of the buildings and campus grounds, former faculty and staff, stories of fond memories submitted by former students, and senior class pictures of as many class as could be found. A lot of prayer and hard work went into making this book become a reality. The publishing and printing were donated and no cost in the development of this book. What a blessing that was for the Alumni Association. Now all of the proceeds from the sale of this book can be used for the special projects the Alumni Association elects to do for the children of the school. This is one way that we are able to give back to those who fed, clothed, and provided us a home and a good Christian education and background.

From the humble beginnings of a scantly clad boy in the hills of Kentucky, Sam Hurley's vision of a

place for children now celebrates 88 years of "Reclaiming the Child."

It’s here! After many months of prayer and preparation, our book of memories is now available. With the thought of compiling a pictorial history of Mountain Mission School, stories of fond memories and senior class pictures, this little book will take you on a journey back through time to the humble beginnings of the school. Covering 88 years of history, you are sure to find a memory of your own. Whether you are an alumnus, current student, staff member, former staff member, family member of someone gone on, or a supporter of Mountain Mission School, you are sure to want a copy of this book of the history of the school.
