Marlene Eickhoff, 78

Marlene Eickhoff, 78, a long time Carthage resident, passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born May 26, 1935 to the late Clarence and Pearl Whyte of Southport, she was a 1953 graduate of Southport High School and worked as a secretary for American States Insurance for four years. She and her late husband, Norman Eickhoff, moved from Indianapolis to Carthage in 1968 when they purchased a 200 acre farm. In addition to corn and beans, the Eickhoffs also grew tomatoes plus many other vegetables and ran a market style u-pick business for many years.

Marlene served as the Ripley Township Trustee in Rush County from 1994 until 2012 when she retired due to declining health. A staunch Republican and a tireless campaigner, Marlene would regularly go door to door to garner votes on her own behalf. She would often hear from her constituents that “you’re the only Republican I’m voting for!” Marlene was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary in Rushville, the Library Board in Carthage, the Carthage Quilting Club, and attended Fletcher United Methodist Church in Carthage.

The last two years were some of the best of her life as she spent time with companion William “Bill” Drake, who survives. She will be greatly missed by not only Bill, but a daughter, Cathy Eickhoff, and two sons, Michael Eickhoff (wife Joyce) of Avon and Eddie Eickhoff of Indianapolis; five grandsons; one great-grandson; a sister, Elaine Roller of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013 at Heritage Funeral Care, Knightstown. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013 at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Carthage.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
