Geraldine “Jerry” Jane Hess Megee

RUSHVILLE — Geraldine “Jerry” Jane Hess Megee passed away Oct. 6, 2012 at her home at Sunrise Assisted Living in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Jerry was born June 9, 1922 in Newark, Ohio, the daughter of August Paul Hess and Ethel Stoyle Luther.

Jerry was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Franklin Megee; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Hennessee “Buddy” and her brother, August Paul Hess “Gus”.  

She is survived by her brother, Donald Hess; sister, Joyce Phillips; her children, John F. Megee “Jeff” (Betsy) of Rushville, Sarah M. Martens (Robert) of Ann Arbor, Mich. and Thomas H. Megee of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; her grandchildren, Joseph Megee (Ann), Jennifer Megee, Theodore Martens (Sarah G.), Nicholas Martens (Casey), Sarah A. Megee and Jared Megee; her great-grandchildren, Jenson Megee, Lauren Megee, and Gavin Martens; and many nieces and nephews and their children.

Jerry attended the College of William and Mary (1940-42) and Northwestern University (1942-44) where she met her husband, John F. Megee. While there she became a member of Chi Omega sorority. John and Jerry were married in Newark, Ohio May 16, 1944 and moved to Rushville to raise their three children. She was a member of the Rushville branch of Tri Kappa Service Sorority. In 1962, the family moved to South Bend where John died Jan. 28, 1975. Jerry then attended Indiana University South Bend and Indiana University School of Social Work in Indianapolis, received her Masters Degree of Social Work in 1978 and was honored into Sigma Pi Lamba. She moved to Decatur, Ill. and founded the Family Systems Center. In 1987, Jerry moved to Bonita Springs, Fla. where she became a Doctoral Candidate in Psychology at the Fielding Institute. She set up her own clinical practice “Family Works” and helped hundreds of clients work through family issues, marital problems, and alcoholism. She retired in 2008 and moved to Ann Arbor, Mich. and then to Russellville, Ky. to live with her sister and back to Ann Arbor to live near her daughter.

Jerry lived a life of constant searching and learning. She was an avid reader and scholar, loved creating gardens, adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and instilled in her children a sense of adventure and wonder. One of Jerry’s favorite sayings was, “I would love to live my life like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.”

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Interlochen Center for the Arts, Interlochen, Mich.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 at Moster Mortuary, Rushville. Friends may visit from 2 p.m. until time of service Saturday at the mortuary. Rev. Cheryl Duke will preside. Burial will follow in East Hill Cemetery.
