His love of mechanical design continued into his retirement years and he spent a great deal of time at the computer.  Rowland was also an avid woodworker and turned out many fine pieces of furniture.

In keeping with the simplicity that he so appreciated in life, Rowland  requested cremation and the remains committed to the sea from U. S. Naval vessel departing from San Diego, CA.  A ceremony will be performed by the commander while the ship is deployed.  The family will then be notified of  the date, time, longitude and latitude once the committal service has been completed.   In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Decatur County Hospice and the Rush Memorial Hospital Foundation.
