Martha Lou Stephen, 83

Martha Lou Stephen, 83, of Kokomo, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at Golden Living Center-Sycamore Village, Kokomo.

Martha was born June 30, 1930, in Jackson Township, Rush County, to Chester A. and Anna Powers Harper. She moved to Kokomo in 2004 to be closer to her family. Martha resided at the Wellington Retirement Community, which she called home for over 10 years. She worked at RCA Victor Records in Indianapolis before she and her husband, Don, moved from Raleigh to Richmond in 1965. Martha was a founding member of Hodgin Road Christian Church in Richmond. She directed music and taught children’s Sunday School, youth groups, and Vacation Bible School from the time she was 14 years old well into her 70’s. Martha was a homemaker, wife, and mother. She provided child care in her home for many years for the children of countless friends and family members. To those for whom she provided care, she will forever be remembered as “Aunt Martha." Serving Christ and loving others, especially children, was her passion.

Survivors include; sons, Brent Scott (Cynthia) Stephen of Kokomo and Donald Gene Stephen of Chambersburg, Penn.; grandsons, Jeff (J’la) Stephen of New Paris, Ohio and Matt (Jill) Stephen of Williamsburg; granddaughters, Kara (Brett) O’Neal and Lisa Stephen, both of Kokomo; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters, Helen Narmoor of Fountaintown and Violet Fern Miller of Centerville; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald G. Stephen, to whom she was married on June 11, 1949, at Hannegan Christian Church in Rush County by Dick Piper; her parents; four sisters, Mary Moore, Bertha Copley, Dorothy Benham, and Betty Lloyd; and one brother, Clarence Harper.

Visitation for Martha Lou Stephen will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Allen officiating. Burial will be in Orange North Cemetery in Orange.
