Sarah Henley Brown

RUSHVILLE — Sarah Henley Brown passed away May 26, 2013, in Winter Park, Fla.

She was born in 1933 in Shelbyville, Ind. Her parents, Marian Wilson Henley and Lowell Henley, moved to Rushville when she was five. A member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, she graduated from Purdue University in 1955.

After graduation, she became sales promotion manager for Reuben H. Donnelley in Chicago, Ill., and subsequently joined the public affairs department of Illinois Institute of Technology, also in Chicago. There she was one of the first female members of the national Sportswriters Association.

She married Charles William (Bill) Brown in 1958 and had three sons, Chip, Ted and Larry. The family moved to West Lafayette in 1962 where Bill was assistant Dean of Men at Purdue University. They moved to the Winter Park, Fla. area in 1971, where Bill served as Dean of Students at University of Central Florida, before retiring in 1990.

Sarah was a stay-at-home mom and was active in the women’s clubs of all three educational institutions. She led a troop of inner city Girl Scouts in the Chicago area and helped teach the youth recreational class at First Presbyterian Church in Chicago. In Indiana, she was active in the alumni group of Alpha Chi Omega.

Sarah was a volunteer public relations specialist for the Orlando chapter of the American Red Cross and served on the board for six years. She also was on the board of the Adult Literacy League, the board of the University of Central Florida Women’s Club and the board of the Arrowhead Cove Homeowners Association. She was a member of Winter Park Presbyterian Church.

She worked as a fundraiser for the American Heart Association and was responsible for the mechanics of forming the Coeur de la Coeur, the heart fund auxiliary. She loved to travel worldwide, was an avid reader and enjoyed an eclectic taste in books.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; her son, Chip and his wife, Angie and grandsons, Trevor and Parker (Maitland, Fla.); her son, Ted and his wife, Regina and grandchildren, Francesca and Billy (Maitland, Fla.); and her son, Larry and his wife, Beth and grandchildren, Grace and Zackary (Maryville, Tenn.).

She was pre-deceased by her parents of Rushville and brother, John Henley of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.
